About Me
I love to read and want to share that love of reading with others.
I also love to write about what I read. This website is a good combo for those two passions.
I tend to favor non-fiction; thus most of the articles are book reviews of mostly science-based books written by authoritative authors who use fact-based research for their works.
I also write about other topics or genres, such as magazines, the act of reading, history, fiction, and so on.
For instance, I have a separate tab for a series I wrote for my local weekly newspaper about graphic novels for adults, again mostly non-fiction. I am currently writing another series for the newspaper about browsing the local library. That series will also eventually be posted here.
One of the formats I write are what I call Book Review Letters.
When I read the books authors have taken so much time to compose, to explain their theories or insights, or to simply share their knowledge, I feel connected to them. It’s as though I’ve spent a good portion of my afternoon knocking around in another person’s head. It’s delightful to see what they know and what they think about what they know.
So I write a review of the book in the format of a letter to the author. At the end, I might ask a question or two to help me understand a point they made, or I might simply want to share an enthusiastic response I had to something they wrote.
I hope they will choose to respond to that question or comment. Just once; just a brief interchange; just a call and response to complete the circle from author to reader, from reviewer back to author.
Here are some ground rules I follow in all my writings:
- I only publish reviews of books I liked reading; I will not waste anyone’s time reviewing a poorly-enjoyed book.
- I write reviews that are respectful, but honest.
- I strive to share what I understand.
- I question those things I don’t understand.
- I challenge what I doubt.
- I celebrate what enthralls me.
- And I give enough background to other readers that they might be encouraged to check the book out for themselves (literally, many of the books I review I get from the library).
I hope you, the reader of this website, will appreciate more fully the knowledge gained from our earnest writers.

Unless otherwise stated, all books cited, whether reviewed or not, are ones I have read from cover to cover. They are books I recommend because I got something out of them.
I really appreciate the Book Review Letter format. You give a concise description of the book’s content, with context from your personal perspective. Then, your thoughtful question/comment for the author is not only insightful, but does help to convey your enthusiasm for the book and its content.
Thank you. I find the format enjoyable to write. I feel as though I’m sitting in front of a fireplace chatting with the author.
